Dalbok dol Wedding, Bulgaria. 19 June 2019
When I was asked to shoot Claire & Yesen’s wedding in Bulgaria I was so pleased. I had been looking forward to the day I was asked to shoot a wedding abroad. It had arrived. The Dalbok dol Wedding! Shooting any wedding requires a bit of research, locations, how to get between places, timings. This gave me so much more to think about. This was more than just a wedding, this was an adventure!
Flying from the U.K and into Sophia airport in the east of the country, I then had a two hour bus journey in the mountains. Upon landing at the airport I met up with some other wedding guests from the U.K. Claire the bride to be is English.
A sense of community and to party…
Upon arriving into the village, in the province of Troyan, I can sense a party was coming to this village. Claire and Yasen greeted me, and showed me to my accommodation, base camp for the next 4 days. The next morning, the day before the wedding we had time to explore the village. We where shown the church, and the house where the partying would take place in the evening. Claire told me that a lot of the residents in the village had all helped with the wedding in some way. People in neighbouring villages where talking about it.
The church ceremony was, well, epic. A quire filled the room with religious hymns that belonged in a cinematic film. All the English side of the wedding had never seen or heard anything like it. Taking photos during this was something Il never forget.
The celebrations started straight away! The wedding spilled out onto the village square. Where people in the community had a chance to join and party. Music, food, beer and dancing. As a photographer I could take enough photos. After we all headed back to Claire and Yasen’s house. Where the celebrations went on from around 1pm to 4am. During this time was red hot summer heat, and we even had about ten minutes of heavy summer rain, from one passing cloud. Nobody stopped dancing during this. It was a celebration il never forget.
